In RIM’s attempt to create a phone that can compete with Apple’s iPhone, they’ve merely created another Blackberry; only difference being the touch screen.
Every Blackberry user knows that you can pick up the basics on how the smartphone works quite quickly. But RIM doesn’t want Blackberry Veterans to purchase the phone; they want newbies to. Even though I was dissapointed with the Storm, if you are looking for a touch screen smartphone (and you’re a newbie), you’re better off with the Storm. Read on to find out why…
While the Storm does offer great multimedia features and a sleek design, navigating the darn thing is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack!
The only reason why already-Blackberry-users would be better off using the Bold instead of the Storm is because of its stronger multimedia and two fast network connections.
The Storm
The first hour or two, I was pretty disappointed with the Storm’s poor navigation system. However, as I relied on it a bit more for messaging, I started to get used to the touch screen keyboard.
But if you’ve used the iPhone, you know that it is much more easier to used than the Blackberry model. I, among with many others, believe that the Storm should have included a Blackberry trackball with the phone because of this. A Blackberry just isn’t a good phone without the track ball.
The loss of the trackball has created many problems. Among these, replying to emails. Because the “reply” option is located directly in between the “save” and “forward” options, I have often chosen the incorrect choice because of the size of my finger. This often leads to annoying back tracking.
The keyboard on the Storm also isn’t too great. I definitely prefer the iPhone’s touch screen keyboard or the typical full keypad over this.
On the plus side, the Storm is a great device for shooting and watching movies. It’s still more of an entertainment phone than it is a smart phone.
The Bold
The only thing that I hated about the Bold was it’s $299 price tag. Even that’s a lot for a good phone in my opinion.
This phone is very fast and it has nice multimedia features just like the Storm. The keyboard itself felt nice and firm, but the keys were a bit slick.
Because of the track ball application, it is a lot more easier to navigate than the Storm.
The camera it carries only offers 2 megapixels, but you can shoot videos with it.
Just like the Storm, setting up my corporate email account was very simple.
Another great thing the Bold has is the WiFi networks. Wireless internet access is always great to have, especially if you’re an on-the-go type of person who goes to meetings around the world.
